GO TO THE HOSPITAL, HAVE SOME PAIN MEDICATION, AND WALK OUT WITH A BABY.
That’s what I thought birth was until 2011 when I found out that I was pregnant with my daughter. I am a learner by nature and once I dove into the world of childbirth, I found that my previous notions of birth were incredibly short-sighted.
Since that time, I have been learning through published literature, by attending conferences and meetings, and most recently by becoming a certified Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth provisional instructor that birth is so much more than an event by which a baby leaves its mother’s womb and enters the world. It is an incredibly important event for both mother and baby. For mom, birth is the point of transition into parenthood and an opportunity to bond with a small human that will be your child which you will love more than anything in the world. For a child, their birth will also be monumental. At this point, most of what we know about what birth is for a baby is biological and rooted in the baby’s survival. They bond with their parents, become inoculated with beneficial bacteria, and must learn to breastfeed. How much of the birth experience affects the baby in non-biological ways is at this point unknown, but undoubtedly important.
Because birth is so important, I have made it a goal to help others achieve their own best birth. Whether positive or negative, your birth experience will stay with you forever. With a little preparation and support, let’s make it a positive one.
